Assistant and/or Associate Professors for SDU Center for Energy Informatics

The SDU Center for Energy Informatics, Faculty of Engineering, University of Southern Denmark (SDU), invites applications for one or more Assistant and/or Associate Professor positions within Energy Informatics. The positions are available from September 1, 2026, and the specific start date will be agreed upon with the successful candidates.

The SDU Center for Energy Informatics is an international research and innovation hub dedicated to advancing the digital infrastructure that underpins modern energy systems. The Center develops scientific methodologies and scalable software technologies that enable intelligent, interoperable, and resilient operation of critical energy infrastructures across buildings, industry, district heating, electric power grids, and sector-coupled energy networks.

Through interdisciplinary research, large-scale collaborations, and active participation in European and international research programs, the Center contributes to strengthening the secure and sustainable transformation of energy systems in Europe and beyond.

What we offer

The successful candidate will join a growing and internationally active research environment characterized by strong academic excellence and close industrial collaboration.

We offer:

  • A research environment focused on distributed AI systems, digital twin architectures, and scalable software infrastructures for energy ecosystems.

  • Close collaboration with utilities, technology providers, municipalities, and global research networks.

  • Participation in national and internationally funded research projects.

  • Contribution to advanced digital twin and agent-based simulation platforms.

  • Opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration across engineering and computer science domains.

  • A supportive environment for academic development and research leadership.

Assistant Professors will receive structured mentoring and complete the Lecturer Training Program.

Associate Professors will take active leadership roles in research development, supervision, and external funding initiatives.

What we expect

Applicants must hold a PhD in Energy Informatics or in a closely related field such as Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Computer Science, or Software Engineering, with an application focus in the energy domain.

We seek candidates with expertise in one or more of the following areas:

  • Distributed artificial intelligence and agent-based systems

  • Agent-based simulation and middleware platforms for multi-agent systems

  • AI-driven forecasting and flexibility orchestration

  • Scalable data and machine learning pipelines

  • Digital twin architectures for cyber-physical energy systems

  • AI-based energy system modeling, simulation, and optimization

  • Secure and interoperable infrastructure architectures for energy ecosystems

  • Software engineering for critical infrastructure systems

The Center operates in an AI-assisted engineering environment. Applicants are therefore expected to demonstrate professional proficiency in modern AI-assisted development workflows and the responsible integration of large language models and code-generation agents into research, modelling, and software development processes. At the same time, candidates must possess strong programming skills in Python and Java and be able to design and implement scalable software architectures for distributed and cyber-physical energy systems.

Assistant Professor

Applicants at the Assistant Professor level are expected to demonstrate:

  • Strong research potential within digital energy systems

  • An emerging publication record in recognized international venues

  • Ability to contribute to collaborative research projects

  • Commitment to teaching and supervision

Experience from externally funded or industry-oriented research projects is considered an advantage but is not required.

Associate Professor

Applicants at the Associate Professor level are expected to demonstrate:

  • Research and teaching qualifications commensurate with the position

  • A minimum of three years of Assistant Professorship or postdoctoral experience

  • A strong and independent publication record

  • Documented experience as Work Package Leader or equivalent leadership role in externally funded research projects involving industry collaboration

  • Experience in supervision of PhD and MSc students

  • Ability to attract and lead externally funded research projects

Associate Professors are expected to contribute actively to shaping and implementing the Center’s research agenda and to strengthen its leadership within the Energy Informatics field.
