Do you want to join GEUS as research assistant within Computational Geology?

Do you want to advance numerical geological modelling and help bridge geology with geotechnics, geochemistry, and geophysics? Then you could be our new research assistant in computational geology.

We are looking for a dynamic and motivated colleague to join the Department of Near Surface Land and Marine Geology (SURFACE) in Aarhus as our new research assistant within computational geology. The position is for a two-year period and is open from August 1st, 2026.

At the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS), we are expanding our capabilities in numerical modelling and aim to strengthen our research in probabilistic data integration. As part of the SURFACE department, you will be based in our new offices on the University of Aarhus campus, working alongside a dynamic group of early-career researchers driving advances in numerical geology.

About the position

The new research assistant position in computational geology is placed at the intersection of geological understanding and quantitative modelling. The position centres on probabilistic data integration, where you will develop and apply numerical methods to combine diverse geoscientific data types into coherent geological models. The work spans a range of specific case studies embedded in different research projects, combining methodological development with applied case work. The research may involve probabilistic or statistical modelling, geophysical inversion, 3D geological modelling, and the handling and interpretation of geoscientific data types such as TEM data, seismic data, CPT, borehole information, and geophysical logging. You will use scientific coding, primarily in Python or Matlab, to build and refine numerical models and probabilistic methods.

The position requires you to work independently and take responsibility for driving your research forward, while collaborating constructively with supervisors and project partners across disciplines. You will be expected to maintain overview across parallel activities and communicate complex ideas clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Who are you?

You hold a master’s degree within the field of geoscience, and knowledge of Danish geology will be considered an advantage. You have documented experience with method development for data analysis and subsurface modelling, and you are analytically strong with the ability to structure complex problems into manageable components. You are well organised, reliable and able to work in a structured way, which is important for balancing methodological development with applied case studies.

Experience with probabilistic or statistical modelling, geophysical inversion, 3D geological modelling, or the handling and interpretation of Danish geoscientific data types such as TEM data, seismic data, CPT, borehole information and geophysical logging will be an advantage, but is not a requirement.

As our new colleague, you are collaborative, curious and comfortable working in an interdisciplinary setting across institutions. You are able to communicate in English, and since the primary language of the organisation is Danish, you should be prepared to learn Danish if you are not already a Danish speaker.

Meet your new colleagues

You will become part of the Department of Near Surface Land- and Marine Geology, where we conduct research within a wide range of topics related to nature, resources, processes, and geology of the surface and the upper 300 meters of the subsurface, on- and offshore.

The department has a strong expertise in quaternary geology, glacial geology, geomorphology, near-surface geophysics, and quantitative geological modelling, which acts as the foundation for a range of research topics and consulting assignments. These include paleoclimate, geomorphology and habitats, nature conservation and restoration, groundwater mapping and protection, raw materials mapping on- and off-shore, shallow geothermal energy, geohazards, landslides and geological tasks in connection with offshore installations, such as bridges or tunnels, harbour constructions, cable trenches and wind farms as well as the geology and geomorphology of the coastal zone.

We have a long tradition for geological and geophysical mapping and investigations on- and offshore, and we have a full shallow-marine geophysical mapping capacity and well data laboratory facilities.

Based in Aarhus, the department consists of 35 enthusiastic colleagues comprising of researchers, consultants, postdocs, technicians, and students.
