Long-term Advisor for Climate and Energy Policy in Kenya

Join our collaborative team of energy specialists and play a meaningful role in supporting Kenya’s future energy landscape. Your technical insights and specialist knowledge will be instrumental in supporting the Kenyan government partners in achieving their ambitious development and climate targets.

The Danish Energy Agency (DEA) and the Royal Danish Embassy in Kenya (RDE) are seeking a Long-Term Energy Adviser to be stationed in Nairobi, with Kenya’s Ministry of Energy and Petroleum (MOEP) and the Office of the Special Envoy for Climate Change – Executive Office of the President.

About the Job We are looking for a professional who can combine analytical skills with the ability to build trust and navigate a complex stakeholder landscape. You will join our bilateral Kenya-Denmark Energy Partnership as a long-term advisor with the purpose of sharing your know-how and best-practices about energy policy development and implementation in Denmark. You will be based at the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum (MOEP), but will also be working with the Office of the Special Envoy for Climate Change, while having a close dialogue and cooperation with the Danish Energy Agency and the Embassy of Denmark in Kenya.

Energy and climate are central pillars of our partnership with Kenya. Kenya’s current and updated NDC’s are both very ambitious and aim to solidify Kenya as a world-leader in sustainable development enhancing economic growth based on access to affordable and reliable energy.

Your tasks will include:

  • Coordination with local partners and relation building.
  • Sharing best practices and principles of energy policy implementation, cross-governmental coordination, and more broadly support good governance in the energy sector - helping to drive implementation efforts.
  • Assisting Kenyan partners in conducting insightful analyses, support conceptualization of initiatives and assist formulation of concrete recommendations to decision-makers in Kenya.
  • Working alongside a specialized technical team, you will serve as a bridge-builder, translating complex themes like energy planning, system operation, and energy efficiency into practical, accessible guidance for the political level.

Two other LTA’s will operate out of MOEP’s Directorate for Renewable Energy – one related to energy modelling and long-term planning with close cooperation with relevant government entities and one related to electricity market regulation and power system operation with close cooperation with other government institutions, such as KETRACO, KPLC and EPRA.

About You We are looking for a dedicated professional with:

  • Relevant Education: A master’s degree within economics, engineering, social science or similar educational background.
  • Policy and Governance Experience: Experience with policy implementation and government processes related to energy systems and the climate agenda.
  • Knowledge of the Danish Energy Transition: Experience and knowledge about the Danish energy transition is a requirement. International experience with the climate and energy agenda is a strong benefit.
  • Strong Analytical Capabilities: Ability to analyze complex energy and climate systems and formulate actionable and implementable recommendations.
  • Clear and Confident Communication: Fluency in English, both written and spoken.
  • Experience in the Danish Energy Sector: A minimum of five years’ experience in the Danish energy sector is a requirement.
