Senior Researcher in Medical Education

The Copenhagen Academy for Medical Education and Simulation (CAMES) invites applications for a position as Senior Researcher, Workplace Learning Research as per 1st October 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter. This a full-time, permanent position.

CAMES is internationally recognised as one of the world's leading centres for simulation-based education and research, with state-of-the-art facilities, a sustained record of high impact peer-reviewed publications, and an extensive portfolio of evidence-based training programmes for health professionals across disciplines and career stages. CAMES collaborates closely with hospitals and primary-care services in the Capital Region of Denmark, and with universities, professional bodies and industry partners both in Denmark and internationally. As a Senior Researcher, you will work at CAMES Rigshospitalet and across partner sites in the Capital Region.

Your job responsibilities

As a Senior Researcher, you will have joint responsibility for the development of CAMES' research environment, and you will contribute to the implementation of the overall research strategy. Through your collaborative skills and broad international academic network, you will advance the academic development of CAMES and its national and international profile. You will lead impactful research at the interface between simulation and workplace learning and study their impact on clinical practice and outcomes through the lens of conversational learning, team performance, and interprofessional collaborative practice.

Your main tasks consist of:

  • Conducting research in key domains
    • The social and conversational dynamics of simulation-based and workplace-based learning — including (a) how feedback, debriefing and coaching conversations support individual and team development across the continuum from undergraduate education to clinical practice; (b) how team processes (such as team reflexivity, team adaptation, and collaborative micro-practices) promote team performance and learning, and staff well-being in diverse clinical settings;
    • The integration of simulation-based education within authentic workplace learning and education, so that learning gains through simulation translate into adaptive expertise and improved performance in clinical teams for the benefit of improved patient outcomes.
  • Extending capacity for methodologic diversity within CAMES, particularly qualitative, educational design and mixed-methods research, to complement CAMES's established quantitative and assessment-oriented traditions.
  • Publishing high impact publications based on your work in collaboration with local, national and international partners
  • Building and leading a research group at CAMES focused on your research domains, including the mentoring and supervision of postdoctoral fellows and early-career researchers
  • Supervising PhD students with specific contributions to qualitative, educational design and mixed-methods research training.
  • Contributing to the funding of your own research group with the help of competitive external research funding
  • Collaborating with private and public-sector research stakeholders, including hospitals, primary-care services and professional bodies in the Capital Region, as well as research-based consultancy
  • Disseminating your research to the outside world, including through senior editorial responsibilities, invited keynotes and contributions to international consensus and standards work
  • Contributing to the development of the research and education environment at CAMES and across the Capital Region of Denmark
Your competences

  • You have an outstanding international track record in health professions and medical education research, and you have established yourself as a prominent scholar in the field.
  • You hold a primary medical or other health-professional qualification in a specialised field together with a research doctorate (PhD) in health professions education or a closely related discipline, and you possess solid research and teaching qualifications at a high international level.
  • You bring a sustained, programmatic body of work, for example: debriefing and feedback; team processes as a driver of performance and learning; and synergies between simulation-based education and workplace-based learning. Your work has shaped contemporary practice and demonstrably influenced the field internationally.
  • You bring methodological depth and breadth, with documented expertise in qualitative, educational design and/or mixed-methods research as a complement to quantitative paradigms, and the ability to build methodological capacity in others.
  • You have broad international research partnerships, including with leading institutions in Europe, North America, and beyond, and substantial experience of research collaboration with private and public-sector stakeholders, including health services, professional bodies and patient and public partners.
  • You have a documented ability to attract significant competitive research funding from national and international funding bodies, both as principal investigator and as a senior partner on multi-institutional consortia.
  • You have a proven track record of translating your research into educational practice through your faculty development initiatives and into improvements in clinical learning, team performance and patient care.
As a person, you are a thoughtful and motivational leader who inspires other researchers and builds trusting relationships with students, colleagues and partners across professional and disciplinary boundaries. As a speaker you communicate the newest and most relevant knowledge in a clear and relevant manner. As a supervisor you are competent, inspiring, supportive and responsible, with a track record of high-quality research supervision for early career researchers, PhD candidates and postdoctoral fellows as a step onward into independent academic careers. You are ready to take co-responsibility for the development of CAMES' to enhance its standing as an international leader in health professions research and education, whilst maintaining a collegial work environment. You foster interdisciplinary collaboration locally, nationally and internationally, and you contribute to a collegial, inclusive and high-performing research culture.
