Postdoc research position: Transformer-based deep learning models for prediction of treatment-induced toxicities in pediatric leukemia

The Pioneer center AI, Copenhagen University, and Copenhagen University Hospital Rigshospitalet invite applicants for a two-year postdoc position, fully funded by the Innovation Fund Denmark Industrial Postdoc (Public organization) program and the Danish Child Cancer Foundation.

Project Description

The project focuses on developing and validating advanced transformer-based deep learning models for the prediction of treatment-induced toxicities, focusing on severe neutropenia, in pediatric leukemia patients. The work integrates state-of-the-art machine learning with large-scale clinical and longitudinal medical data and aims to translate methodological advances into clinically actionable decision-support tools.

The project group comprises pediatric oncologists and clinical immunologists from Rigshospitalet, clinical pharmacologists from Bispebjerg Hospital and computational scientists from Pioneer center AI at Copenhagen University. The candidate will be spending time both at Copenhagen University and Rigshospitalet during the project period.

Responsibilities

- Design, develop, and evaluate transformer-based and other deep learning models for risk prediction
- Work with heterogeneous medical data (EHRs, laboratory time series, treatment protocols)
- Contribute to methodological research suitable for publication in top-tier ML and AI venues
- Collaborate closely with clinicians and medical researchers
- Support clinical implementation, validation, and documentation of developed models
- Participate in grant writing and dissemination of results

Required Qualifications

- PhD in Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, or a closely related field
- Strong background in deep learning, including sequence models and transformers
- Proven experience with Python-based ML frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow)
- Track record of publications in top-tier machine learning or AI venues (e.g., NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, MICCAI)
- Experience working with medical or healthcare data in secure environments
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience with longitudinal and time series modeling
- Familiarity with data privacy, security, and reproducibility
- Interest in translational research and clinical deployment of AI systems
- Experience with collaborating in interdisciplinary research teams

The position is open from April 1, 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter. For further information about the position, please contact:
