Postdoctoral position in theoretical and computational chemistry

The research team led by Erik Hedegård at the Department of Physics, Chemistry and Pharmacy, University of Southern Denmark (Odense) invites applications for a postdoctoral position in theoretical and computational chemistry. The position offers the opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research in one of two main directions:

  • Application of quantum mechanical method (QM/MM) to bioinorganic catalysts for C–H activation, or

  • Development of quantum chemical methods for transition metal systems, with a particular focus on methods for large, complex systems (proteins, enzymes, and condensed phases).

We seek an outstanding, ambitious, and highly motivated candidate with a PhD degree in chemistry (or equivalent), preferably with expertise in physical chemistry, theoretical chemistry or computational chemistry. The candidate will join a dynamic and curiosity-driven research group, working in close collaboration with other research teams both within the Department and internationally.

The Department of Physics, Chemistry, and Pharmacy offers a stimulating, interdisciplinary research environment, spanning topics from drug discovery, bioinorganic and bioorganic synthetic chemistry to materials science.

The appointment will be for two years. The exact starting date is flexible but expected to be in summer or autumn 2026 (latest December 2026). Funding is available for conference participation, workshops, and summer schools.

More information on the research conducted in the Hedegård group can be found here: https://www.sdu.dk/en/forskning/ctic

Natural Science Research – Interdisciplinary Strength
The Department of Physics, Chemistry and Pharmacy is one of four departments at the Faculty of Science, SDU and is located in Odense. At the Department, we contribute to solving some of society’s greatest challenges within energy, environment, health, and sustainability. We succeed because we build bridges between disciplines and transcend traditional boundaries. Our interdisciplinary mindset is not only a fundamental condition, but also our strength. And it is a strength that ensures our research and education are recognized both nationally and internationally.

Our vision is to create and apply knowledge across the natural sciences. We are unique in housing research within physics, chemistry, and pharmacy under one department, which provides excellent opportunities to explore the intersections between these disciplines. Read more about our vision here.
