Research Assistant for AI Imaginaries project in the cluster for AI in Architecture

The Royal Danish Academy, Institute of Architecture and Space, is seeking a research assistant to contribute to the early-stage development of probabilistic geospatial machine learning models for understanding future Danish land‑use transformations under compound climate impacts. The position is connected to research activities in the AI Imaginaries project in the cluster for AI and Architecture, which explores how climate data, spatial planning frameworks and architectural imaginaries can be integrated into new methods for modelling uncertain spatial futures.

The vacant position as research assistant is affiliated with the Institute of Architecture and Space, and employment will happen on 16 May 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The position

We offer a creative, engaged, developmental, and visionary educational and research environment.

The position includes influence, responsibility, and the opportunity to shape both research and teaching. The research assistant will work at the intersection of architectural representation, environmental planning and geospatial analysis, supporting the development of data-driven tools and design‑based inquiry that combine Earth‑observation datasets, climate projections and spatial scenarios with participatory, visual and design-oriented methods. The work will involve contributing to research, workshops, visualisation tasks and knowledge dissemination, including integration of machine‑learning insights into spatial design processes and architectural imaginaries.

We place great emphasis on strong collegial collaboration with space for mutual inspiration and professional exchange. The position as research assistant will consist of research. Teaching and other tasks may occur to a limited extent.

Your duties will include:

  • Contributing to research activities related to probabilistic geospatial modelling, climate‑driven land‑use scenarios, and spatial design inquiries connected to the DK‑Future framework.
  • Drafting and co‑authoring research grant applications, including preparing conceptual frameworks, assembling methodological descriptions, compiling datasets and references, and coordinating input across the research cluster.
  • Daily maintenance and organisational support in the research cluster, including upkeep of shared datasets, coordination of meetings, internal communication, and supporting the flow of ongoing research tasks.

Qualifications

You hold a Master in Architecture and preferably you have a background within landscape.

These dual qualifications are required due to the interdisciplinary nature of the project, which combines architectural representation, spatial design methods, landscape‑scale environmental understanding and geospatial interpretation of climate‑driven land‑use change.

We also expect that you will bring documented competencies in:

  • spatial and environmental analysis within urban, rural or coastal contexts
  • architectural and landscape representation techniques that support scenario‑building and climate adaptation frameworks
  • experience working in research projects involving environmental, climatic or geospatial datasets, preferably in cross‑disciplinary constellations

Salary and terms of employment

The terms of pay and employment will be in accordance with the agreement in force between the Danish Ministry of Finance and a number of organisations under the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) for academic staff in public service. A qualification allowance will be negotiable, depending on your skills and experience.

The position will also be filled in accordance with the applicable job structure

This is a part-time position with an average of 22,2 working hours per week. The position expires without further warning on 31 december 2026.

Application

Please submit a letter of motivation, CV, diplomas documentation of your qualifications as listed above. You may choose to include a list of published works as well as copies (maximum of 3 works).

You should submit your application via the link “Apply for position” no later than 25 March.

Application material received after the application deadline will not be considered.

You can read about the application process here.
