Research Assistant for the Research Unit of Neurobiology

The Research Unit of Neurobiology, Department of Molecular Medicine (IMM), SDU, is seeking a Research Assistant for a fixed-term position.

The position is full-time, starting March 1, 2026, and running until February 31, 2028.

Research Unit of Neurobiology

The Research Unit of Neurobiology at the Department of Molecular Medicine (IMM), SDU, is an interdisciplinary research unit conducting translational research to understand the neurobiological mechanisms underlying injury and disease of the central nervous system and to translate this knowledge into improved diagnostics and treatments. The unit is particularly well known for its preclinical research in areas such as stroke, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and spinal cord injury. Research at the unit spans from fundamental disease mechanisms to clinically relevant perspectives, with the overarching aim of improving future treatment options for patients.

The project

In this project, we investigate how microplastics, a growing global environmental challenge, may potentially affect early brain development. The work includes preclinical studies to determine whether microplastics can cross the placenta, reach the fetal brain, and induce neuroinflammatory responses in the mouse brain. You will work with relevant laboratory and analytical methods and contribute to behavioral studies examining potential developmental consequences. The project lies at the intersection of neuroscience and environmental toxicology and has clear translational relevance.

Specifically, you will work on experimental mouse studies, including the systematic planning and execution of experiments, sample collection and tissue processing, and subsequent laboratory and analytical work. You will contribute to behavioral studies and participate in data processing, analysis, and dissemination of results in close collaboration with the rest of the project group.

The position requires the ability to engage collaborators, maintain oversight, and make decisions when necessary. You work in a structured manner and are outgoing and flexible during periods of high activity. In addition, you will participate in international knowledge dissemination, for example, through meetings, presentations, and other professional communications.

Qualifications

We are seeking a candidate with a relevant master’s degree in neuroscience, natural sciences, or a related field. You hold a FELASA certification and have experience with both qualitative and quantitative methods, including data collection and analysis. You thrive in collaboration with others but are also able to work independently and in a structured way, both alone and as part of a team.

Experience with flow cytometry, behavioral analyses, and various histological techniques is an advantage, as is teaching experience. Furthermore, strong written and oral communication skills in both Danish and English are required.

We offer

You will join a dedicated, interdisciplinary research environment with a high level of academic expertise and close integration with practice. The position offers the opportunity to participate in a project of significant societal relevance and to continuously develop your skills within translational research. You can also look forward to a positive, collegial work environment with strong opportunities for professional development, collaboration, and knowledge sharing.
