Research scientist for leading monitoring activities

The Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) opens a permanent full time position for a research scientist to lead the monitoring activities in Denmark and Greenland about collection of in situ reference observations.

DMI is responsible for the monitoring of atmospheric UV and Ozone, in collaboration with the Danish Environmental Protection Agency, where we carry out ongoing monitoring of the ozone layer and launch of ozone sondes in in Greenland. In addition, we maintain and operate the IS18, the northernmost infrasound station in its International Monitoring System (IMS) in Qaanaaq, Greenland under the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) program.

Fiducial reference measurements are crucial for calibrating e.g. the Copernicus satellite products and you will engage in these activities through leading and coordinating the activities where FRMs are collected for Sea surface temperatures (SSTs).

You will be part of the unit called Satellites and the Arctic, where you will be project lead on the CTBTO project, the UV/Ozone monitoring and the DMI shipborne SST radiometer campaigns. Most of the activities are carried out in projects financed through UN, ESA, EUMETSAT, the EU’s Copernicus programs and you will also be responsible for coordinating the proposal submission for new funding phases. Finally, you will work on the validation of new satellite products using the collected in situ observations.

Main working tasks:
  • Lead the UV and Ozone observational monitoring program at DMI.
  • Lead the CTBTO monitoring project.
  • Take lead in the collection and analysis of Fiducial Reference Measurements (FRMs) of Sea Surface Temperature in the high latitudes.
  • Work on the validation and development of satellite products and algorithms in the high latitudes.
  • Present results at scientific conferences and publish the results in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Participate in the Copernicus CMEMS SST and Sea Ice projects and in the development of new in situ observations in the Arctic.
  • Coordinate proposal submissions for new project funding phases.
Qualifications/Experience:
  • PhD degree in geophysics, engineering or similar.
  • Experience with leading monitoring projects, such as CTBTO or the UV Ozone monitoring program.
  • Experience with collection of Fiducial Reference observations and working with instruments, preferably in the high latitudes.
  • Experience with scientific data analysis and publication of manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Advanced programming skills in e.g. Fortran, Python or Matlab.
  • Experience with remote sensing of the ocean and ice.
  • Can work well in a team in close collaboration with your colleagues, and work independently.
  • Good skills in oral and written English.
The position is in the Danish National Centre for Climate Research (NCKF) at DMI, which employs approximately 70 scientists of which 20 are located in the Satellites and Arctic unit. We have a strong international profile which is also reflected in the many nationalities here and in an English "working language".

We have approximately 350 employees, most of whom work at DMI’s new headquarters at Sankt Kjelds Gård in Østerbro. The new place has interior design that allows for an activity-based way of working.

Employment and Salary Will be according to the Danish Law and Agreements. It will be possible to apply for an addition to the basic salary. DMI offers a flexible working week of 37 hours including a paid lunch break, and six weeks of paid vacation annually. If you come from abroad, there is a possibility for a reduced tax scheme the first 7 years.
