Student assistant for data projects in the Human Rights and Development department

Data that sheds light on inequalities and discrimination is important for driving human rights change, which is why we have a strong focus on human rights data in the Institute’s work on sustainable development. We work with innovative use of existing human rights data, as well as generation of new human rights data. We have developed a number of digital tools, and a text mining algorithm that enables classification of text into human rights themes. In the SDG Human Rights Data Explorer, the algorithm links recommendations from the UN human rights monitoring mechanisms to the Sustainable Development Goals and Targets – and we are currently training the algorithm for application in other contexts as well.

We are looking for a student assistant with relevant qualifications and a strong interest in data analysis, data management and digital tools to support us in this work. Please consult our homepage www.humanrights.dk for a general introduction to the Danish Institute for Human Rights.

You will be assigned a supervisor and undertake some of the following tasks:

MAIN TASKS
  • Support with compilation, formatting, pre-processing and quality assurance of different types of data.
  • Support development and use of scripts and automation of data related tasks
  • Training of the algorithm in environment and climate change-related categories in collaboration with colleagues and external partners
  • Support maintenance and updating of digital tools (back-end uploads and edits)
  • Develop data visualizations and analyse data patterns and trends in cooperation with colleagues (for publications, trainings, presentations, etc.)
  • Other administrative or organisational tasks in support of the work.
YOUR QUALIFICATIONS Required:

  • Relevant studies in data science or other fields of relevance to this work (your educational program can also be in human rights or development studies as long as you are tech savvy and have experience working with data).
  • Experienced user of the Microsoft package (Word, PowerPoint and especially Excel)
  • Basic user of PowerBi and interest to learn more
  • Basic user of Python and interest to learn more
  • Experience in pre-processing data tasks (data cleaning, quality checking, data extraction, transformation).
  • Great attention to detail and a process-oriented and problem-solving mindset. Ability to work independently, and work with ad hoc tasks and deadlines
  • Fluency in English
Desirable:

  • Interest in text mining and language analysis (including NLP).
  • Knowledge of Spanish, French or Arabic an asset, but not necessary.
It is a requirement that you currently are enrolled in an ongoing education programme.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT The position is part time (maximum 15 hours per week) from February to July 2026 and based in Copenhagen.

Salary is set in accordance with the Danish Ministry of Finance’s agreement with The Union of Commercial and Clerical Employees in Denmark.

Starting date preferably 1st of February 2026.

HOW TO APPLY Please send a CV and a cover letter, indicating your availability and suitability for the Student assistant position. Please also include a confirmation of enrolment.

Please make use of the link on the website. Deadline for applications is Friday 16th January 2026.
