Student Assistant for DMI’s National Centre for Climate Research

The National Centre for Climate Research (NCKF) at the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) is seeking a student helper as soon as possible to contribute to various IT related tasks within NCKF’s unit: Satellites and the Arctic (NCKF-SAT). You will become part of DMI’s NCKF research department and work closely with DMI’s skilled and dedicated employees in the unit on assisting in the operational implementation and monitoring of processing jobs.

About the role At DMI AND NCKF-SAT, we work on developing algorithms that can relate large amounts of satellite measurements to physical parameters, such as ocean and sea ice temperature or sea ice extent and concentration. The algorithms are often developed and put in production to deliver near-real-time products to users.

You will mainly assist the researchers in implementing processing jobs for operational production suites. This is a position that will link between the operational IT department, responsible for the IT infrastructure, and the researchers developing the algorithms. The majority of the work will be carried out within the EUMETSAT Satellite Application Facility (SAF) project, to assist the researchers implementing the operational processing chains or to set up monitoring of the production and the product quality. In addition, you will help quality-assure data, and contribute to validation reports, for example half yearly validation reports in the Ocean and Sea Ice SAF (see e.g. OSI-SAF). Similar tasks will also be carried out within the Copernicus Marine Service and Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S).

What you bring For the position, we imagine that:

  • You are proficient with a computer and comfortable in a Linux environment
  • You have experience programming in Python and working with GIT.
  • You have insight into statistical methods and experience handling large amounts of data
  • You have an interest in remote sensing and geophysics
  • You collaborate easily and wish to become part of DMI’s NCKF-SAT unit

As an authority on weather, climate and the sea, DMI provides meteorological services to the Danish defense, emergency preparedness as well as civil aviation and shipping in Denmark and Greenland.

We have approximately 350 employees, most of whom work at DMI’s headquarters at Sankt Kjelds Gård in Østerbro, Copenhagen.

Employment and Salary Will be determined in accordance with the collective agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Organisations of Public Employees - State Sector (the OAO-S collective agreement), as well as the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and HK STAT. There is a standard rate for student assistants in the Danish government.

The specific working hours will be adjusted according to workload and your studies, averaging approximately 10-15 hours per week. Working hours are also arranged to take exam periods into consideration.
